North African Dance The SCHIKHAT are the professional dancers of Morocco hired to perform at weddings and other family celebrations. The earthy movements are focused on the torso and often include percussive footwork executed with cymbals tied to the toes. The dancer displays her or his skills with the “danse du plateau”, where a tea tray is balanced on the head while executing complex isolations and acrobatic floor-work. Both men and women perform this dance, with men performing at outdoor festivals and in cafes, and women at private events.
