From ancient Mesopotamia, to the courtly traditions of the Ottoman and Persian empires, to the seeming timelessness of desert nomads and tribal cultures of Arabia, the Orient (as it was called by early European travelers) in actuality refers to diverse cultures of the Eastern world rich in history, thought and artistic expression that collectively capture the Western imagination.
